Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide advice to clients, in a variety of industries, on trade compliance matters (i.e., import and/or export matters).
  • Lead and manage client projects including trade compliance audits, reviews, program development and training among other areas.
  • Support marketing by drafting articles and blogs. 
  • Research, write, and review advice.
  • Aid in the management, career development and training of team members.
  • Provide leadership to law clerks and review their work.

Qualifications

  • Minimum three years of recent direct experience in customs and international trade law (prior government experience helpful). 
  • JD Degree from an ABA-accredited law school and member in good standing in any state Bar.
  • Must be comfortable having direct client contact, prioritize client requests, and meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to work both independently and with a team.
  • Outstanding and in-depth experience with U.S. import and export control regulations with the ability to address complex matters with practical advice and solutions
  • Understand U.S. Customs and Border protection laws and regulations including (but not limited to):
    • the U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the U.S. (HTSUS), 
    • U.S. customs valuation requirements, 
    • country of origin marking rules, 
    • CBP’s forced labor rules, 
    • intellectual property rights including recordations with CBP, 
    • detention/seizure cases, 
    • mitigating penalty or liquidated damages notices, 
    • filing prior disclosures with CBP, and
    • developing import compliance and training programs.
  • General export control and sanctions experience (but not limited to):
    • export compliance (e.g., EAR and ITAR) including deemed exports, 
    • export jurisdiction and classification of complex products,
    • licenses and other ITAR/EAR export authorizations, 
    • export control compliance audits/review and assessments, 
    • voluntary self-disclosures, 
    • advisory opinion requests, 
    • classification and developing a trade compliance framework
    • technology control plans, 
    • negotiating Consent Agreements, 
    • Congressional Notification,
    • EAR de minimis guidelines and developing sustainable export compliance programs 
  • Excellent interpersonal, time management, written and verbal communication/presentation skills with strong technical skills

Requirements

  • Must be a J.D. or LLM student
  • Strong research and writing skills
  • Demonstrated interest in international trade/international business law
  • Ability to work remotely, remain communicative, accountable, and deadline-oriented
  • Must have your own computer and strong Wi-Fi (strongly prefer PCs); and have MS suite installed on your computer
  • Team player
  • Available to work between 20-40 hours a week with availability on Mondays from 11AM – 3PM ET
  • Ability to receive academic credit for this position
  • Preferred: Bilingual (English/Spanish)

Responsibilities

  • Legal research and writing to assist clients in a wide range of customs and international trade issues involving several federal agencies 
  • Provide emails to clients, produce memos, draft letters and submissions to federal agencies, etc. 
  • Contribute an article a week to our widely read Customs & International Trade Law Blog, which is archived by the U.S. Library of Congress

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform legal research
  • Organize and prepare files for submission to government agencies 
  • Request updates on case files from government agencies
  • Track case progression on weekly basis and develop reporting of same
  • Audit Clio Manage and Clio Grow
  • Calendar and oversee client’s deadlines and responses 
  • Draft Power of Attorneys, Letters of Representation and Extension Requests
  • Advise clients of the current status of their case regularly (per our welcome letter)
  • Create and update letters (knowledge of Microsoft Word)
  • Draft letters to government agencies 
  • Setup client’s ACE account, download, customize, and analyze ACE reports
  • Assist with the review and calculations of client’s ACE data for Prior Disclosures
  • Assist client with ACE technical issues
  • Create government accounts for clients (ex. FDA medical device accounts) 
  • File FDA Food Facility Registrations for Domestic and Foreign Facilities
  • Ensure training manuals are updated every 6 months
  • Send intake forms to all new hires
  • Train new staff to the Firm
  • Send survey and close out letter to clients at conclusion of the case (and update Clio on the result)
  • Run weekly KPIs on Consults, New Clients, Referrals and Type of Cases
  • Submit applications to Government Agencies (FOIA, TRIP, Protests, Confidential Manifest)
  • Track A/R collections
  • Track client payments including those with a payment plan
  • Be a team player!
